The Efficacy Of Marigold Extract On Cognitive Performance And Mood In Adults
Surprising Benefits of MaQxan: Beyond Eye Health
Macular Pigments, namely Lutein and Zeaxanthin, have been traditionally associated with promoting healthy eyesight. However, cutting-edge research has unveiled their potential benefits that extend beyond eye health, particularly in the realm of cognitive function and brain well-being.
The brain is susceptible to oxidative stress and inflammation, which can lead to cognitive decline over time. Thankfully, carefully processed and scientifically formulated Lutein and Zeaxanthin have shown remarkable abilities to counteract oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, thereby promoting overall brain health.
Studies have demonstrated that higher levels of Lutein in the bloodstream are linked to better cognitive performance and a decreased risk of cognitive decline in older adults. By neutralizing harmful free radicals, Lutein acts as a protective shield for brain cells, preserving their health and functionality.
Interestingly, insufficient Lutein intake has been associated with an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that shares risk factors with cognitive decline. Unfortunately, the average Lutein intake in adults remains low, leaving the elderly particularly vulnerable due to factors like poor nutrition, reduced senses, changed food habits, and economic constraints.
The positive impact of Lutein extends beyond adulthood; observational studies suggest its crucial role in brain development and cognition during early life. Infants primarily obtain Lutein from breast milk, making the mother's intake essential for their cognitive development.
Lutein's presence in brain regions associated with memory and learning indicates a direct influence on brain tissues and functions.
Furthermore, higher Lutein intake or blood levels have been linked to a reduced risk of cognitive decline in older adults, suggesting that consistent consumption of Lutein-rich foods or scientifically validated supplements may protect against age-related cognitive impairment. By promoting the health and integrity of neurons responsible for transmitting information, Lutein plays a pivotal role in maintaining cognitive function.
MaQxan® is a branded Lutein-Zeaxanthin that has shown promising evidence of improving cognitive health. A clinical study conducted on 30 subjects using standardized Cognitive assessment revised (SCAR) for 5 weeks revealed notable improvements in cognitive function in 46.6% of the treatment group with MaQxan®.
Ingex Botanicals, the leading Lutein and Zeaxanthin manufacturer in India, developed a proprietary form of the combination from selected marigold flowers cultivated and harvested under strict and validated protocols, showcasing good efficacy during Cognitive health studies.
Moreover, MaQxan® strictly adheres to safe and green manufacturing methods, using only ethanol, enabling its use in various forms, from kids' formulas to geriatric products targeting cognitive health. Stringent quality checks for residual solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contaminations ensure the safety of vulnerable populations.
While this section has focused on Lutein's effects on cognition, there are exciting discoveries yet to come.

Clinical Study -2 (MaQxan 204)
A randomized, double blind placebo-controlled cross-over clinical study to evaluate the effects of Lutein and Zeaxanthin MaQxan® (204) on Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) and eye stress response through protecting photoreceptor cells from blue light effects; 3 arm, 2 sequence.
Macular pigment (MP), consisting of lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Z), is believed to provide retinal protection against photo-oxidative damage. The current study investigates the response to supplemental MaQxan® (204) lutein and zeaxanthin in terms of macular pigment optical density (MPOD). The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of MaQxan® (204) in the healthy macula and how these variables relate to various demographic factors. 60 subjects were enrolled in the trial as per the inclusion criteria. Three groups of subjects were created: A, B, and C. All the subjects were given MaQxan® (204) and placebo as per the randomization chart prepared computationally. As the study is double-blinded, subjects getting MaQxan® (204) or placebo were coded. This three-arm study had A, B, and C groups, where the A group got MaQxan® (204) for the complete 8 months, the B group got MaQxan® (204) for the first 4 months and Placebo for the next 4 months, and the C group got placebo for the first 4 months and MaQxan® (204) for the next 4 months. Macular pigment optical density (OD) at 30 eccentricity at the baseline time point ranged from 0.08 to 1.04, and it was highly connected with better visual performance. After supplementing MaQxan® (204) after 8 months, the average MPOD (at 30 eccentricity) increased from 0.41 to 0.57. MaQxan® (204), supplementation improved most individuals' visual performance and considerably enhanced MPOD after 4 months of consumption. MaQxan® (204) may be a useful therapeutic agent in managing the protection of photoreceptor cells against diseases and blue light effects.

Healthy Eyes
The role of Lutein & Zeaxanthin
Everyone wishes to enjoy an excellent vision throughout their lifetime. Routine eye checkups and a diet rich in carotenoids are important for healthy eyes. Carotenoids are pigments that give vibrant red, orange, yellow and green colors to fruits and vegetables.
The macula is the pigmented area in the retina of the human eye. Since Macula has the highest concentration of photoreceptors in the retina; it produces the sharpest vision. Free Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso Zeaxanthin concentrations are more in Macula and hence they are known as Macular Pigments.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are generally fat-soluble carotenoids that function as anti-oxidants protecting cells from free radicals. About four decades of research establishes that Free Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso Zeaxanthin in macula filters shorter wavelength light ie blue light and prevents age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-Zeaxanthin are the three dietary carotenoids present in “macular pigment”. These three carotenoid pigments are responsible for our ability to perceive colors. The macular pigments selectively filter out image-degrading visible blue light for sharper vision. Lutein is also known as “the eye vitamin”.
Rising eye disorders, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and increasing eye health awareness among the general population, are expected to fuel the growth of the eye health supplements market.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible severe visual loss in people of higher age and hence the geriatric population is at greater risk of eye disorders.
Almost all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. This light may affect vision and could prematurely age the eyes.
Digital eyestrain: Blue light emitted from mobile phone screens and other digital devices can decrease contrast leading to digital eyestrain. Fatigue, dry eyes, bad lighting, or how you sit in front of the digital screen can cause eyestrain. Symptoms of eyestrain include sore or irritated eyes and difficulty focusing.
Retina damage: Some studies suggest that continued exposure to blue light over time could lead to retinal cell damage. This can cause vision problems like age-related macular degeneration.
Though the blue light exposure received from screens is small; the concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure is due to the proximity of the screens and the time spent looking at them.
Impact of COVID-19 on Eye health supplement.
With the new norm of daily life after the pandemic, people of all age groups are glued to the screens of digital gadgets resulting in increased screen exposure and invariably the blue light. Kids and the office-going population have been the most affected age groups where the blue light effect is more. This may lead to the rise in the number of people with eyesight disorders due to increased screen time.
Lifestyle & Diet: Observational studies have suggested an inverse relationship between dietary or serum lutein and risk for age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. The best way to guard against blue light damage is to reduce our level of exposure. Limit the time you spend on computers or with electronic devices, and take regular breaks from staring at LED screens. But with the inset of current lifestyle, avoiding all the screens is not feasible. It’s important to remember that our eyes have a natural level of Lutein and a healthy diet or supplement intake can help us keep these levels topped up. While hundreds of “superfoods” have been labeled over the years, nothing has shown as much promise as the carotenoid vitamin, Lutein for eyesight. Together with its sidekick, Zeaxanthin, this antioxidant works to protect both your eyes and skin.
